It’s Tablet Month!

Didn’t you get the memo?

Amazing how the holiday season influences the introduction of new devices in September.

So, Microsoft announced but hasn’t yet shipped their Microsoft Surface. Apple might be announcing a new iPhone and iPad. Amazon has jumped in too!

The new Kindle Fire HD has the same $199 price, but sports a better display, stereo sound, dual band wifi, faster processor and more services. So, it remains at a good pricepoint for those wanting to dip their small toe in the tablet pond. It ships after September 14th.

The new new Kindle Fire HD 8.9″ is more of “real” tablet. It has 4G service so it’ll get the Internet even without Wifi. And the 4G service is only $49/year for 250Mb/month. Yep. Not $49/month – $49/year! Nice touch. The screen is larger than the new Fire HD, hence the added 8.9″ to the name. Amazon says they’re concentrating on services, not features to sell their new lineup. This means they will be presenting their version of Android – easier to use. The price is $499 tho – so we’re in Apple iPad pricing.

Last but not least, the new Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader. Not a tablet, but in tablet form. It’s just for reading. Sound limiting? Yes, but it does it so well! Not only is the contrast much better, but it also has built-in lighting for reading at night and does this really well too! The cost is $119-$179 and battery life is 8 weeks – not days! So, why get one? Reason 1 – a tablet is very distracting for reading. You can be reading a book and get a notification about a friend’s Facebook post or email or text. You think about whether you’ve planted your crop in Farmville. Reason 2 – less glare, easy to read in both sunlight and now at night in the dark.

It’s an exciting time to be a tablet user!
